DIRECT ATTACHED STORAGE

Mobile military and civilian systems coupled with large and complex data sets are the primary drivers behind the need for rugged high-speed data storage devices. United Federal Systems, Inc., a Division of United Computer Products Co., Inc., has introduced into its line of Optia products an extremely rugged portable 12 TB eSATA direct attached storage (DAS) device. The DAS is a ready-to-use system with an advanced array controller allowing for a fully automated, instantaneous user-specified RAID configuration.

With a unique and versatile arrangement, the DAS has 6 x 3.5” SATA drives. Five drives are RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10 configurable and hot swappable for uninterrupted performance and redundancy. A unique sixth drive serves as a dedicated automatic fail-over in the event of drive failure within the array. The DAS has a single controller to select the RAID configuration and eSATA, USB and 1394a/b ports to interface with computers or peripherals. The eSATA interface to external peripherals provides very high data exchange rates. Utility includes data transfer, data transport, data collection, temporary or backup storage, system backup, uploading software upgrades to remote or mobile systems. Constructed of cast aluminum alloy for exceptional strength and durability, the DAS is capable of sustaining 3-foot drops on any corner onto a solid surface. United designed the DAS to exceed MIL-STD-810G for shock and vibration.

The DAS provides a large storage capacity in a small package, measuring 9.8-inches high, by 10.4-inches wide by 11.5-inches deep and weighing 28 pounds. The DAS is stackable, mountable and comes with a carry handle. Configured with removable and washable air intake filters, the DAS is suitable for harsh operating environments with operating temperatures ranging from 32 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees F.

SECURITY APPLIANCES

Fortinet, a network security provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions has announced a new FortiGate multi-threat security appliance designed to meet high-end requirements of the mid-enterprise customer segment. According to the company, the new FortiGate-1240B appliance offers best-in-class 40 Gbps firewall and 16 Gbps IPSec VPN throughputs, which represent a 400- and 800-percent performance advantage, respectively, over the nearest competitor. The FortiGate-1240B platform continues the technology formula introduced on the other two members of the company’s mid-enterprise family—the FortiGate-310B and FortiGate-620B—by also providing the highest port density and best price/performance ratio among products in its class. The three products make up Fortinet’s complete range of multi-threat security appliances for the mid-enterprise. The company also announced new and improved functionalities for its FortiOS 4.0 operating system with a new maintenance release (FortiOS 4.0 MR1), which powers all FortiGate devices. Among the dozens of enhancements in this new release, the new operating system will add antivirus scanning and URL filtering for IPv6 traffic, optimized log data to reduce network storage consumption by 50 percent, policy-based granular endpoint control for FortiClient- capable endpoints, and enhanced data loss prevention capabilities.

Additionally, Fortinet recently announced that the FortiGate family of multi-threat security appliances had successfully completed the stringent certification process and is now approved for listing on the U.S. Army Information Assurance Approved Products List (IA APL). In addition to this latest U.S. Army IA APL addition, Fortinet’s FortiGate multi-threat security appliance models have been certified to FIPS 140-2 Level 2, JITC IPv6, NIAP Common Criteria EAL4+, and submitted for the NIAP Common Criteria Medium Robustness V3.0 program.

DEEP-VEE ALUMINUM HULL

According to Rock Salt Alloy Boats, Palacios, Texas, they have designed, built and are marketing the first production aluminum boat designed with 24-degree deadrise, deep-vee hull to make smooth riding an option for those who need the toughness and durability of aluminum craft.

The toughness, durability and low maintenance have made boats built of plate aluminum standard fare for the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy as well as state, county and municipal agencies. The first boat was completed this past summer and is being used as a demo of the company. At 34 feet long and 10 feet wide the boat carries 450 gallons of fuel resulting in a 700-mile cruise range and a 400-mile high-speed range. The boat has a full-load top speed of 52 knots (60 mph), and the company believes that 60 knots is in the cards.
